SIMBA SC head coach Steven Barker praised his side’s tactical composure after they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Tanzania Prisons in the Mainland Premier League at Jamhuri Stadium on Sunday.
The Msimbazi Street giants effectively settled the contest in the first half, securing their seventh win of the season with a commanding display.
Simba took the lead through Selemani Mwalimu, who skillfully evaded his markers before calmly slotting home to cap off a flowing attacking move. The visitors doubled their advantage before the break when captain Rushine De Reuck confidently converted from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Although Simba controlled proceedings in the second half, they were unable to extend their lead, opting instead to manage the game and protect their advantage.
“We delivered a complete 90-minute performance today, maintaining authority from the opening whistle to the final whistle,” Barker said. “Our ball movement was fluid, and we created several high-quality openings during the first half.
“We put them under significant pressure early on and fully deserved our halftime lead. In the second half, the focus shifted to game management and avoiding unforced errors. While I would have liked a third goal to truly put the game to bed, it was a professional and commanding display overall.”
De Reuck, who earned the Man of the Match (pictured) award, described the encounter as challenging despite the convincing scoreline.
“It was a difficult match because our opponents were very disciplined and didn’t allow us to settle into our natural rhythm,” he admitted. “However, we remained committed to our tactical plan, and I am incredibly proud of the determination the boys showed.”
The South African defender acknowledged Tanzania Prisons’ resistance but praised Simba’s persistence.
“They made life difficult for us, but our ability to keep creating opportunities eventually paid off. We are thrilled to leave with all three points.”
On contributing to the score sheet, De Reuck emphasized collective responsibility.
“It’s important for defenders to chip in with goals; it shouldn’t only be the responsibility of the forwards. I’m happy to contribute, but the team’s success is always the priority. Personal milestones only matter if the team wins, and today I’m just glad I could help us get the result.”
The 2-0 victory strengthens Simba’s position in the title race. The Msimbazi Giants now sit fourth in the 2025/26 NBC Premier League standings with 22 points from 10 matches, trailing second-placed Young Africans SC by just three points.
Simba’s campaign has been built on attacking efficiency and defensive discipline. They have scored 18 goals while conceding only four, giving them an impressive goal difference of +14 as they continue their climb toward the summit of the table.
