TANZANIA's Lightweight boxer Ezra Mwanjwango on Monday became the country's second pugilist to garner a medal in the ongoing All-Africa Games in Ghana.

Musa Maregesi was the country's first boxer to win a bronze medal in the ongoing Games. Mwanjwango last Monday night beat DR Congo boxer Frazier Mujinga 5-0 and the former will tomorrow face Zambian Andrew Chilata in the semi-finals.

Mwanjwango earlier beat William Mohamed of Seychelles through Referee Stopped the Contest (RSC) to sail through to the last eight.

Commenting on the two bronze medals won by the boxers, Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) president Lukelo Wililo said the medals are for all Tanzanians, adding he expects more medals to be won in the showdown.

He said the medals are an honour and a present to President Samia Suluhu Hassan who is an advocate of sports development and growth in the country.

Wililo revealed: "So far boxing has already brought two bronze medals, we hope more medals will be won in the Games which are taking place in Ghana."

"The two medals are an award to our President Samia who has had her tenure seeing the sports sector enjoying good support from the government, the medals are the fruits of the seeds she is sowing in the sports industry," he said.

Meanwhile, Tanzania's boxer Lucas Changalawe on Monday qualified for the quarterfinals of the Games after beating Egyptian boxer Abdelgawwad Salah.

The win by Changalawe was revenge given the Egyptian- who had already qualified for the Paris Olympics - previously defeated the Tanzanian in the 2022 African qualifiers.

The Egyptian is also the All-Africa Games' Lightweight defending champion, given the boxer clinched the gold medal in the category in the Games that took place in Morroco in 2019.

Salah beat Changalawe 3-2 in last year's African boxing qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics which took place in Senegal.
