ZANZIBAR has embarked on a landmark public-private partnership (PPP) priced at $12m with Infinity Developments to restore key historical sites across the islands.
Dr Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, permanent secretary for Tourism and Antiquities, said the project will be implemented within Stone Town, a UNESCO world heritage site — and will include restoration works and infrastructure improvements across several historic locations.
The deal, signed over the weekend, brought together Tourism and Antiquities along with Labour and Investment ministries in signing the pact, to preserve cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism.
“The sites targeted include Old Fort, the High Court Museum as well as baths scattered along Hamamni, Forodhani, Kidichi and Kizimbani, he said, noting the renovation goal is to restore the sites to their historic glory while enhancing their appeal to visitors and providing educational and cultural value to the community.
The collaboration marks a new chapter in protecting and promoting Zanzibar’s heritage. By conserving and revitalizing the sites, in an initiative also aligned with the vision expressed by President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi to strengthen tourism and historical heritage as a catalyst for economic growth and social development.
Khamis Suleiman Mwalimu, principal secretary for Labour and Investment, said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to creating a favourable and competitive environment for private investors, while generating new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for local communities.
Samuel Saba, the investment firm chief executive officer, explained that under the company’s Infinity culture programme, the first phase of the investment will focus on restoration, conservation and improving visitor facilities.
This project goes beyond restoring historic buildings. It will create vibrant cultural spaces that foster education, tourism and community pride for present and future generations, with the partnership being among the major PPP investments in the heritage sector in Zanzibar in recent years, he added.
