PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday inaugurated a new 318bn/- national defence headquarters in Kikombo, in the sprawling government capital.

Analysts noted that completion of the building marks the first time the Defence ministry, the National Service Department and army headquarters are under the same roof, which the president said was a major step in strengthening national security infrastructure.

She said the combined defence headquarters was a symbol of the nation’s maturity and capacity to implement strategic projects using our own resources, as completing the headquarters demonstrates the country’s growing confidence and institutional strength.

“This building is not just a structure of walls and offices. It reflects our ability to plan, decide and execute major national projects through local expertise and commitment,” she declared, underlining that the facility is intended to improve operational efficiency and strategic, data-driven security management

This investment strengthens the country’s autonomy in defence decision-making and raises its standing across Africa in matters of security as through the headquarters, “we are reinforcing our independence in defence affairs and elevating Tanzania’s prestige on the continent,” the president affirmed.

She cautioned that the facility must not remain a source of visual pride, admired only for its appearance, as it must serve as a centre for strategic thinking, professional analysis and coordinated defence planning that responds to today’s challenges.

Modern defence capability is no longer defined entirely by weapons as in the current global security environment, defence is just partly tied to military hardware, she said, stressing that it depends on strong intelligence systems, modern technology, effective communication networks and highly skilled professionals.

The president expressed satisfaction with the level of technological advancement incorporated into the headquarters after inspecting the facility. She was pleased with the progress made particularly in adopting modern systems while calling for dedication in completing the remaining phases.

The government will oversee the timely completion of outstanding works, ensuring that subsequent phases are completed on schedule so that the new facility “fully supports our mission to protect the nation,” she elaborated.

“Commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities includes building a defence institution that safeguards our borders, protects our national interests and guarantees lasting peace and security for our people,” she added.
