THE Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has been urged to enhance modern services at Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) stations to improve traveler experience and stimulate economic growth.

Prof Makame Mbarawa the transport minister issued the directive today February 12, 2025, while officiating the launch of a KFC restaurant at the Dar es Salaam SGR station.

He underscored the importance of expanding services at the stations, including financial facilities, to better cater to passengers’ needs.

The establishment of the globally recognized fast-food chain at the state-of-the-art SGR station offers travelers access to high-quality catering services. The move aligns with efforts to attract investments that contribute to economic development and job creation.

Highlighting the economic impact of the investment, the minister stated that the restaurant’s presence would create employment, boost local sourcing, and provide valuable skills training for Tanzanian youth.

“KFC’s entry into the station environment is significant, offering employment opportunities and equipping over 800 young people with essential skills in hospitality, food service, and management. Travelers will now enjoy top-tier, internationally recognized meals while supporting local economic growth,” he said.

Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo, representing Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, praised TRC’s leadership for fostering investment-friendly policies. He noted that embracing food businesses within the station premises encourages economic progress.

“We commend TRC’s Director General for his forward-thinking approach. Many would be hesitant to integrate food services within station buildings, but this move demonstrates a commitment to economic expansion,” he said.

TRC Director General Masanja Kadogosa reaffirmed the corporation’s dedication to supporting investments within the SGR project, emphasizing their role in improving service quality.

Dough Works Limited Managing Director Vikram Desai, whose company operates KFC in Tanzania, expressed pride in bringing the brand to railway travelers.

“Our goal is to create jobs, empower communities, and contribute to the national economy while ensuring travelers enjoy world-class dining options,” said Kadogosa.

KFC, a leading quick service restaurant (QSR) brand, operates more than 29,000 outlets across 145 countries and territories as of 2024. Since opening its first restaurant in the U.S. in 1952 and expanding internationally from 1965, KFC has strategically entered African markets to serve the continent’s growing middle class.
