HOME Affairs Minister Innocent Bashungwa has assured the public that authorities will trace and punish all criminals, including those involved in abductions.
Bashungwa said this in Mwanza yesterday after visiting Blessing Modern Primary School at Nyasaka, Ilemela District, emphasising that law enforcers would show no leniency towards criminal activities.
He referred to the recent abduction of two pupils, the incidence which affected families and the community.
“We should not test professionalism and capability of our security forces,” he said. “Criminals who kidnapped our children will face consequences of their actions,” he said.
Bashungwa also cautioned against underestimating the national security systems: “To anyone thinking of challenging our security forces, my message is clear: do not try.’’
The minister reassured the public that the government will prioritise psychological wellbeing of the rescued children, ensuring they receive the necessary care and support.
On Monday, police in Mwanza rescued two pupils from Blessing Modern School aged eight and five who had been abducted while being transported to school on a bus. The children were found unharmed at a house in Nyegezi area.
Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa confirmed the incident, saying the two suspects were killed after attempting to attack the officers with machetes, iron rods and a dagger.
“Our intelligence led us to the house at Nyaburogoya Street where the children were held. When officers arrived, two armed men attempted to resist arrest, and police had to use live ammunition, killing the suspects and rescuing the children,” he said.
The pupils were taken to hospital for medical attention and police have launched manhunt for other suspects involved in the abduction.
“Police will not tolerate criminal activities, including abductions. We address the issues with full commitment,” he declared.
Nyegezi Ward Councillor Edith Mudogo called on local leaders to report new tenants to authorities to enhance security.
