TANZANIA is attracting international attention as major investments in sports, particularly football, position the country as a rising force on the African sporting map, the government has stated.
The government’s efforts under President Samia Suluhu Hassan have impressed the Confederation of African Football (CAF), prompting its Executive Committee to consider holding key meetings in the country.
Speaking to journalists yesterday, Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Paul Makonda (pictured), said that President Samia sent a special message to CAF President Patrice Motsepe on January 16, acknowledging his contribution to developing football in Africa and promoting peace through sports.
“The message underlines President Samia’s sincere commitment to continue investing in sports, regardless of cost, to ensure Tanzania becomes one of the leading football nations in Africa and beyond,” Makonda said. “This dedication inspired Motsepe to collaborate more closely with Tanzania.”
The minister explained that the growing partnership between Tanzania and CAF has facilitated discussions on multiple issues, including CAF’s request to host major meetings in the country. The decision reflects the federation’s recognition of Tanzania’s progress in sports infrastructure development.
Currently, the Tanzanian government is investing approximately 1.76 trl/- in the construction and renovation of stadiums and sports facilities across Arusha, Dodoma, and Dar es Salaam. The programme also includes upgrading roads and services surrounding the venues, ensuring that infrastructure meet international standards.
Makonda revealed that CAF President Motsepe has already expressed interest in visiting Tanzania for the Executive Committee meeting. Preliminary delegations are scheduled to arrive in Dar es Salaam, while the main meeting is expected to take place on February 13 at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Hall.
“The visit of these officials presents an important opportunity for Tanzania to showcase itself as a safe, peaceful, and investment-friendly country that prioritises sports development,” Makonda said.
He added that the event would also allow Tanzanian officials to receive technical guidance from CAF to maintain compliance with international standards.
Preparations for the meetings are being overseen by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, ensuring that guests are received with appropriate protocol from the airport to all venues.
Makonda concluded by stressing that Tanzania’s growing prominence in sports diplomacy is largely due to President Samia’s visionary leadership.
“Her recognition on the international stage, receipt of awards, and dedication to building sports diplomacy continue to position the sector among the top ten contributors to national development,” he said.
Tanzania’s investments in sports are not only enhancing its global image but also inspiring young athletes, fostering unity, and promoting peace across the country. As the nation hosts continental football leaders, it signals a broader ambition to become a hub for sports excellence in Africa.
