AS the 2025 general election approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has granted permits to 157 civil society organisations to lead voter education initiatives across the country.

Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, the INEC chairman, made this observation when closing a training session for district-level officials on using the voter registration system, noting that of those granted permits, 42 will serve as election observers, with nine international groups and 33 local organisations involved in the effort..

Noting that this is a vital step toward a transparent election process, the INEC chairman highlighted the importance of collaboration among local officials, government agencies and the public to ensure that the voter registration update process runs smoothly.

As election observers, civil society organisations are expected to play an integral role in educating the public on the new system and ensuring that the process remains fair and transparent for all eligible voters, he said.

The registration period for eligible voters in Morogoro, set for March 1 to 7, is a critical time for citizens to update their voter information for the upcoming election, he said, encouraging residents to participate in large numbers.

Their involvement is crucial for a democratic and fair election, “and the only way to ensure your voice is heard in the 2025 elections is by updating your registration,” he stated.

“This is your chance to contribute to electing leaders who will drive development and progress in our communities.”

Faraja Madugu, registration officer for Morogoro Urban, underscored the significance of this registration process, seeing it as the foundation of a credible election.

“Without an updated voter register, the integrity of the election process is at risk. The update allows us to ensure that all eligible voters are accounted for and can make their choices on election day,” he stated.

Judith Nguli, the Mvomero district commissioner, urged councillors and municipal officials to take an active role in mobilizing their communities for voter registration, a call echoed at a district council meeting, where she reaffirmed the importance of the registration update for the success of the polls.

The voter registration update in Morogoro is part of a larger, multi-phase campaign now at its 12th phase covering Morogoro and Tanga regions, largely complete, with preparations for the next phase already underway, the INEC chairman noted.

The effort marks a crucial step in preparing for the 2025 elections, with the update campaign conducted under the slogan “registering as a voter is the foundation of a credible election,” he added.
