THE Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) is anticipating a highly competitive and thrilling derby between Simba SC and Young Africans SC on Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

With both teams having made significant investments in their squads this season, the stage is set for an electrifying showdown between these two Tanzanian football giants.

TPLB spokesperson Karim Boimanda (pictured) revealed that the upcoming derby has generated significant international interest, with numerous requests from journalists and fans from outside Tanzania seeking to cover and attend the game.

Boimanda emphasized that while the match is part of the NBC Premier League, its continental appeal and heightened excitement set it apart from a regular fixture.

"Given the enormous international interest, with many foreign journalists and fans eager to witness the game, this match requires exceptional preparation," Boimanda said.

"As a high-profile league fixture, it demands a unique approach. We've been working hard to ensure that this will be one of the most memorable matches in our league's history."

He added: "Simba and Young Africans have shown great commitment this season through their player acquisitions, technical staff appointments, and pre-season preparations. This level of dedication ensures we will witness a thrilling match that will raise the standards of the league."

Young Africans, buoyed by a resounding 4-0 victory over Pamba Jiji in their last outing, come into the derby in fine form. Simba, on the other hand, are looking to bounce back from a frustrating 2-2 draw against Coastal Union, where they squandered a 2-0 halftime lead.

Last season, Simba endured a difficult time against Young Africans, suffering a 5-1 loss in the first round, a result that led to the sacking of their coach Roberto Oliveira.

The second-round fixture saw Young Africans triumph again with a 2-1 win. However, Simba regained some pride by defeating their rivals in the Community Shield final on penalties after a goalless draw.

Simba are determined to reclaim the Premier League title after a three-year drought. Their rejuvenated squad, led by head coach Fadlu Davids, has given the club renewed hope for silverware this season.

Key additions to Simba's lineup include goalkeeper Moussa Camara, midfielders Deborah Fernandez, Augustine Okejepha, Awesu Awesu, and Yusuph Kagoma. The team's attack is spearheaded by Leonel Ateba, Steven Mukwala, and Valentino Mashaka.

For Simba, the derby against Young Africans is crucial for their title ambitions.

Young Africans, the reigning three-time champions, have retained most of their squad from last season, bolstered by the arrivals of Clatous Chama, Prince Dube, Duke Abuya, Jean Baleke, Chadrack Boka, and Aziz Andabwile.

Simba’s recent record against their fierce rivals has been poor, with just one victory in their last 10 league encounters. This adds further pressure on the club as they look to reverse their fortunes and keep their title hopes alive.

Both teams are also representing Tanzania in continental competitions this season, with Young Africans competing in the CAF Champions League and Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup. Both clubs are eager to surpass last season’s performances, where neither advanced beyond the quarterfinals.

As Saturday’s derby approaches, football fans across Tanzania and beyond will be watching eagerly, anticipating a fiercely contested battle between two of Tanzania’s footballing powerhouses.
