SHINYANGA Regional Police Commander Janeth Magomi, has reminded passengers to take responsibility and speak out when they witness drivers violating traffic laws in order to prevent accidents.

Magomi made the remarks during the launch of the “Passengers Speak Out” campaign at the region’s central bus station.

The initiative aims to reduce road accidents by encouraging passengers to actively report traffic violations, thereby improving road safety.

She urged passengers to report incidents such as reckless driving or the disregard of traffic regulations, emphasising that speaking up before an accident occurs is far more effective than raising concerns after an incident.

“Contact numbers for reporting violations are clearly displayed on buses. Passengers should use these numbers or inform traffic officers when they stop the bus. This will help prevent accidents caused by negligent driving,” she said.

Magomi also highlighted the importance of passenger safety, noting that drivers must recognise their actions directly impact the wellbeing of everyone on board. She stressed that adherence to traffic laws and safe driving practices are essential to protecting lives.

Seif Nassor, Chairperson of the Shinyanga Regional Road Safety Ambassador (RSA), stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility. He urged passengers to not only report violations but also to promote cautious driving as a means of reducing accidents in the region.

Denis Magembe, the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) Manager in Shinyanga Region, advised bus owners and agents to adopt online ticketing systems. He explained that this would help prevent overcharging and ensure fair practices for passengers.

However, some passengers voiced concerns about certain traffic officers who, they claim, collude with bus owners to permit reckless driving.

The passengers expressed frustration, stating that such collusion undermines their complaints and makes them feel their safety concerns are not being taken seriously.
