Approximately 5,000 of the 135,000 refugees at the Nyarugusu camp in Kasulu district, Kigoma region, have received aid worth over 100 million Tanzanian shillings, provided by Itel Tanzania in collaboration with the international refugee organization UNHCR.
The donation, which included a variety of items, was handed over by Itel Tanzania’s Marketing Manager, Ms. Sophia Almeida Mafiri, to the camp's head, Ndg. Politics Manjenje. The donation was made as part of Itel’s commitment to giving back to the community.
"We, at Itel Tanzania, have teamed up with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to bring aid to refugees here in Nyarugusu. The aid we’ve delivered today includes 5,000 pieces of bed nets, vitenge, kanga, feminine hygiene towels, and underwear for children, women, and men, with a total value of over 100 million shillings," said Ms. Sophia Almeida Mafiri.
In response, Mr. Jean Bosco, the head of UNHCR in Kasulu District, expressed his gratitude to Itel for the timely support, highlighting the organization’s ongoing financial struggles, which have made it difficult to assist the Tanzanian government in addressing refugee challenges.
"First and foremost, I would like to thank Itel for the support they have given us. It’s true that our organization is going through financial difficulties, which have limited our capacity to help the Tanzanian government in supporting refugees. Today, the cry of the refugees has been heard, and Itel has answered the call. Thank you very much, and we look forward to your continued support," said Mr. Jean Bosco.
Meanwhile, the camp’s head, Ndg. Siasa Manjenje, expressed that the aid would greatly benefit the refugees, as it was distributed according to their needs. He called on other organizations, both governmental and private, to follow Itel’s lead and contribute to supporting the refugees in Nyarugusu.
"We thank Itel for their generous donation, as it will help many people. There are many people in need at the camp, so I urge other organizations and individuals to come forward and contribute. Nyarugusu welcomes you all," said Manjenje.
This collaboration between Itel Tanzania, UNHCR, and the Nyarugusu refugee camp demonstrates the power of community support in addressing the needs of displaced persons.
