MUHAS set to honour Ali Mwinyi with symposium

MUHIMBILI University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is set to honour the legacy of its first Chancellor, the late Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi, by hosting a special symposium on Friday.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Prof Appolinary Kamuhabwa, the MUHAS Vice Chancellor, announced that the symposium will take place at the university’s Mloganzila campus, located on the outskirts of the city.

He stated that the event will feature a variety of activities designed to recognise Alhaj Ally Hassan Mwinyi’s significant contributions to education, health, and community welfare.

Prof Kamuhabwa further explained that one of the key events will be the official launch of the Hassan Mwinyi MUHAS Endowment Trust Fund (AHMMEF).

“This visionary initiative is aimed at supporting the long-term advancement of education and research at the university,” he said.

The fund will provide sustainable financial support for innovative projects, academic programmes, and the welfare of both students and faculty.

Additionally, the fund’s goal is to strengthen MUHAS’s position as a leading institution in health and allied sciences education, cutting-edge research, and quality healthcare delivery in Tanzania and beyond.

Another activity will be the inaugural Ali Hassan Mwinyi annual symposium, which will bring together top experts from the health and education sectors to discuss critical issues shaping the future of the fields adding that a keynote address will celebrate Alhaj Ally Hassan Mwinyi’s enduring legacy and his remarkable contributions as Tanzania’s second president.

He said MUHAS will also present the official Chancellor’s robe, traditionally worn during graduation ceremonies, to Alhaj Ally Hassan Mwinyi’s family as special tribute.

“This symbolic gesture honours his exceptional contributions to the university’s growth and the advancement of the education sector,” he said.

“The ceremony aims to inspire both current and future generations to uphold and continue his visionary legacy for the university and the nation,” he added.

He said the event will also feature a health and education exhibition and the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a new college of medicine.

The don said the symposium will be preceded by a two days screening camp scheduled for Wednesday to Thursday this week at the Mloganzila campus offering a wide range of medical services.

Prof Kamuhabwa explained that the special health camp will provide diagnosis and treatment for eye, ear, nose, and throat conditions, oral and dental health issues, as well as screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, hepatitis, and prostate cancer through blood tests.

Also, the camp will provide public education on proper medication use and drug resistance, infectious disease awareness, medical equipment maintenance and repair, health data processing using artificial intelligence, and nutrition guidance.
