The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) has released names of 27 people who have shown interest to contest at the committee's general election slated for next month in Dodoma.
Speaking yesterday, TOC chairperson for the elections, Ibrahim Mkwawa, , said all 27 have met the first round of the requirements of the elections which are slated for December 14.
He said that only 12 positions are up for grabs. This is in accordance with TOC recent amendments of the committee constitution that has changed the portfolios of secretary general and treasurer from elected to be employed members.
He said so far the battle for the president of the committee is a four horse race between Michael Washa, Anthony Mtaka, Henry Tandau and Nasra Mohammed.
He said the battle for TOC vice president has attracted two candidates only, Suleiman Jabir and Jamal Iddi.
The chairperson said 20 people have shown interest to contest for executive committee positions.
He said the committee will include five members from Mainland Tanzania and five from Zanzibar, with each side required to have at least two female candidates.
“So far, we have 27 people who have met the requirements to contest at TOC general election slated for December 14 in Dodoma. The process is still ongoing. In brief, from Monday to Wednesday we will start receiving complaints.
“On Tuesday next week we will announce the final decision we made on complaints. The final list of contestants will be announced on December 3 and from 5 to 13 will be time for campaign,” he said.
In an earlier interview, Mkwawa emphasized that gender balance will be a priority, ensuring that women candidates are adequately represented.
The TOC election commission is led by Mkwawa with his vice chair, Malangwe Ali Mchungahela, and secretary, Halfani Omari.
