SHETIEL Emanuel Shetiel, a second-year ICT student from Geita, has emerged as the winner of the Jordan Chess Superleague 2024/2025, held at Jordan University College (JUCo) in Morogoro.
This marks Shetiel’s third consecutive victory in the prestigious tournament, but this year, he faced a tougher challenge from runner-up Samwel Amos Lema, a second-year Bachelor of Business Studies – Marketing student.
The two players won one game each against each other, showcasing intense competition at the top.
However, Lema's championship hopes were dashed after he suffered a loss to Peter Luitfrid Nnaly, another Marketing student, who ultimately finished fourth.
The best-performing foreign student was Ugochukwu Celestin Wisdom Anyalebechi from Nigeria, a first-year BA Philosophy student.
Both Lema and Nnaly have been awarded an Erasmus+ scholarship to study at the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (UMCS) in Lublin, Poland.
In March, they will join fellow Tanzanian student Cleophas Charles Mrope to represent JUCo at the Polish National Championships of Universities.
The experience in Poland, where chess is highly popular, will be invaluable for their development.
Upon returning, they will set their sights on qualifying for the Tanzanian national team for the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan.
