THE Kilimanjaro International Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, is one of Tanzania’s most prestigious sporting events, attracting thousands of runners from within and outside the country. A key player in ensuring the hydration of participants is Kilimanjaro Drinking Water, which has been a supporting sponsor for over two decades.

In this interview, we speak with Christopher Loiruk, Head of Sales & Marketing - Bonite Bottlers Limited, to learn more about their role, contributions, and long-term commitment to the event.

QUESTION: What inspired Kilimanjaro Drinking Water to become a supporting sponsor of the Kilimanjaro International Marathon?
ANSWER: The marathon takes place in Moshi, which is where our water source is located. Additionally, the name of the marathon aligns perfectly with our brand, Kilimanjaro Drinking Water.

The event attracts participants from both inside and outside Tanzania, making it a great opportunity for us as a premium water brand sourced from Mount Kilimanjaro to be part of such a significant gathering.

Q: How long has Kilimanjaro Drinking Water been involved with the Kilimanjaro International Marathon, and how has your sponsorship evolved over the years?

A: We have been supporting sponsors of the event for 21 years, since 2005. Over the years, our involvement has grown, and Kilimanjaro Drinking Water has been the official drinking water for the marathon throughout this period.

Q: Could you describe the scale of Kilimanjaro Water’s support for the marathon in terms of logistics and water provision?

A: We ensure a continuous supply of Kilimanjaro Drinking Water to the organizers, delivering directly to designated water stations along the marathon route and at Ushirika Stadium, where the race starts and ends.

Q: What unique challenges do you face in ensuring that thousands of runners have access to clean drinking water throughout the marathon?

A: The organizers have a well-planned system that includes a reasonable number of water points throughout the race route. Trained personnel are stationed at these points to efficiently distribute Kilimanjaro Drinking Water to the runners, ensuring proper hydration.

Q: How does your company prepare for race day to ensure all participants are adequately hydrated during the different stages of the marathon?
A: We work closely with the organizers to deliver Kilimanjaro Drinking Water directly to the designated water points. There are over 13 water stations spread across the 42-kilometer route, as well as at Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU) Stadium (Ushirika Stadium), where the marathon begins and ends.

Q: In addition to providing water, are there any other ways in which Kilimanjaro Drinking Water contributes to the success of the marathon?

A: Yes, we supply more than 90,000 environmentally friendly, disposable 200ml paper cups to be used for decanting Kilimanjaro Drinking Water at various water points. Additionally, we ensure the timely delivery of products to Ushirika Stadium and all water stations along the marathon route.

Q: As a brand, how does supporting such a high-profile event like the Kilimanjaro International Marathon align with Kilimanjaro Drinking Water’s values and mission?
A: Kilimanjaro Drinking Water is a premium brand, sourced from a unique and natural location. Our water is produced following international and national standards using state-of-the-art technology. Being part of this marathon reinforces our commitment to quality, reliability, and community engagement.

Q: What feedback have you received from runners and event organizers regarding your support, and how does this influence your future involvement?
A: We have received continuous appreciation and compliments from the organizers for our unwavering support and cooperation. Our role has been dynamic over the years, growing to ensure the marathon’s success.

Besides the main sponsor, Kilimanjaro Drinking Water has been a consistent presence in the event longer than any other sponsor.

Q: With the 23rd edition of the marathon approaching in February 2025, what new initiatives or improvements can we expect from Kilimanjaro Drinking Water?
A: We plan to enhance hydration efforts by making Kilimanjaro Drinking Water available not only during the marathon but also before and after the event. This includes increased distribution at outlets to ensure easy access for participants and visitors from within and outside Tanzania.

Q: Beyond the marathon, how does Kilimanjaro Drinking Water contribute to promoting health, fitness, and environmental sustainability in Tanzania?

A: We actively engage with Tanzanian communities by supporting various social events, sports, and entertainment initiatives.

Additionally, we promote environmental conservation through tree-planting programs around Mount Kilimanjaro and other areas across Tanzania. We also collaborate with both private and government-led environmental initiatives at district, regional, and national levels.
