Tanzania braces for Nigeria test in ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier opener

TANZANIA's U-19 women's cricket team will get its campaign in the 2025 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier underway on Sunday, facing Nigeria in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and hosts Rwanda will participate in the regional showpiece, seeking one slot for participation in the ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup.

Tanzania's U-19 women's side, as revealed by the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA)’s Media and Communication Officer, Atif Salim, would jet off to Kigali today for the regional showpiece, slated to conclude on September 29.

Salim exuded confidence, stating the body is optimistic the national U-19 women's cricket side has what it takes to secure progression to the 2025 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup.

He pointed out that the players have had a good time with their coach in training and they went to Uganda for a Bilateral Series recently.

Salim stated: "We are hopeful they are well prepared for the tournament as only one team would get the ticket to go to the World Cup."

The second match would see the national U-19 women's cricket squad confront Malawi at Gahanga B ground on Monday.

The day would moreover witness the other Group B sides put their virtuosity to show, with Nigeria playing against Zimbabwe on the same ground thereafter.

The national U-19 women's cricket team would wrap up the group stage two days later - locking horns with Zimbabwe at Gahanga B ground.

The semi-finals have been slated for September 28, with the first of which would be played at the Gahanga B ground.

The other semi-final has been scheduled to be played at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College venue.

The third-place play-off has been scheduled for the following day at the Gahanga B ground, and the final would be played the same day at the same venue.

Cricketers making Tanzania's U-19 women's squad for the coming qualifiers are Agnes Qwele, Mwanaidi Athuman, Saumu Deo, Rebecca Ezekiel, Lightness Elisha, Maria Massawe, and Joan Elisha. 

Adolphina Sylvester, Englid Omurama, Josephine Shirima, Farida Kinyumbi, Rahma Kibwana, Zakia Bewe, and skipper Jenipher Gabriel complete the list.

Arun Yadav is the national U-19 women's cricket team's head coach and Nassib Kelvin is his assistant.

National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General Neema Msitha, TCA Chairman Balakrishna Sreekumar, and a section of the association's other officials were also in attendance.

Sreekumar expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the presence of the dignitaries at the occasion.

The TCA boss acknowledged the unwavering support that the government officials have shown towards Tanzania's cricket- a statement of their commitment to the growth of the sport.

The 2025 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup qualification is a series of regional qualification tournaments to determine the final four teams for the 2025 U-19 Women's T20 World Cup.

The global showpiece would have the America region lining up the United States, while Samoa is the East-Asia Pacific contender. Europe would enter Scotland.

The Africa Qualifier is divided into two divisions - with Division 2 having taken place in Kigali, Rwanda from August 21-27.

A total of seven women's U-19 teams from the region competed against each other in a single round-robin format.

The top two teams of the Division 2 tournament - Kenya and Malawi - advanced to the main Africa Qualifier.

Kenya and Malawi have joined the U-19 women's teams from Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe in the Division 1 tournament.

The participating teams in the Division 1 tournament have been placed in groups A and B.

Group A teams are Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, and Uganda and squads making Group B are Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
