THE Mama Samia Legal Aid campaign is set to begin next week in six regions, aiming to provide legal assistance to prisoners and remandees across the country.
Esther Msambazi, National Coordinator of the campaign at the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs, shared the news during a two-day training session for coordinators who will oversee the campaign's implementation at the council level. She explained that the coordinators' primary responsibility is to ensure the campaign reaches as many citizens as possible, providing essential legal aid services.
The campaign, which has already been conducted in 11 regions, will now focus on six new regions: Lindi, Mtwara, Kigoma, Geita, Katavi, and Kagera, beginning on 24 January. Msambazi emphasised that the initiative aims to reach a large number of citizens while expanding its coverage across more areas and regions.
She also highlighted the participation of 20 lawyers from the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) as part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2024, which facilitates collaboration in providing legal aid. The lawyers will assist citizens who cannot afford legal representation.
"Many citizens face legal challenges but lack the financial means to hire lawyers. TLS's involvement will help ensure more citizens receive the legal representation they need," Msambazi noted.
Through this initiative, two lawyers will be stationed in each council to offer legal services, significantly enhancing the campaign's capacity to support citizens nationwide.
In her address in New Year, President Samia Suluhu Hassan assured the public that the government would amend laws to improve access to legal aid for the poor through the Samia Legal Aid Campaign.
