IN a groundbreaking initiative to combat HIV, the U.S. Government, through USAID and PEPFAR, is spearheading a strategic “counter-attack” during the Ndondo Cup in Dodoma, which kicked off over the weekend.

This grassroots soccer tournament is being transformed into a powerful platform for health intervention, particularly targeting young men and boys who are often underserved by traditional health services.

Building on the impressive success of previous Ndondo Cup events in Dar es Salaam, Iringa, Mbeya, Mwanza, and Ruvuma - where tens of thousands of football fans accessed HIV testing and vaccination services - this event in Dodoma marks a continuation of the U.S. Government’s proactive efforts.

The “counterattack” approach integrates essential public health services into a widely celebrated community event, ensuring that critical HIV prevention and treatment resources reach those who need them most.

At the heart of this initiative is the ‘SITETEREKI’ youth campaign, designed to engage individuals aged 15-24. This campaign empowers young people to take charge of their health by providing key information about HIV, addressing the stigma attached to it, and facilitating access to essential HIV services, including HIV testing, antiretroviral therapy (ART) for those who test positive, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and condoms.

Additionally, the U.S. Government employs the ‘Kuwa Bingwa’ campaign, encouraging men to prioritize vaccinations for themselves and their families, reinforcing the message that vaccinations are a vital step toward health and well-being.

Moses Bateganya, a representative from USAID, emphasized the innovative nature of this strategy, stating: “We believe that sports can be a powerful force for promoting behavior change and improving access to services. Our partnership with the Ndondo Cup and the Government of Tanzania reflects a commitment to innovative strategies that yield real health outcomes.”

Through the Breakthrough ACTION project, the U.S. Government and Tanzania’s Ministry of Health focus on shifting the narrative in favor of public health.

The Ndondo Cup stands as a testament to the effectiveness of innovative, community-centered strategies in the ongoing battle against HIV in Tanzania, showcasing the U.S. Government’s leadership in utilizing sports as a vehicle for health intervention and youth empowerment.
