THE Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has urged Tanzanians to involve hiring licensed electricians for home wiring who possess licences issued directly by the authority.
EWURA’s communications manager, Titus Kaguo made the call in Dar es Salaam recently during a training session about energy and water services regulation for the Tanzania Journalists’ Workers Union (JOWUTA).
Kaguo explained that the primary objective is to minimse risks, such as fires, which are often caused by unlicensed electricians.
“Over the past three years, we have issued 8,000 licenses, and we continue to raise awareness on this matter,” Kaguo said.
Eng Mwanamkuu Kanizio, EWURA’s acting manager for the Eastern Zone, further elaborated on the authority’s efforts to create public education awareness.
He highlighted that seminars are being held across regions and at our universities to increase awareness and build capacity for a wider audience.
“While there are rogue electricians, we are actively working to regulate them. We require individuals to show us the work they have done,” Kanizio said.
He also emphasised that EWURA is the sole authority responsible for issuing licences to electricians performing home wiring.
Anyone working without the proper authorisation from EWURA is committing an offense, which could lead to legal action, including imprisonment, fines or both.
JOWUTA Secretary-General Suleiman Msuya urged journalists to serve as ambassadors, helping spread EWURA’s message to the public in order to achieve positive outcomes for the community.
