AHEAD of the 2024/25 Women’s Premier League season, Simba Queens have appointed Yusif Basigi as their new head coach on a one-year deal.

Basigi (pictured), who joins from Ghanaian top-tier side Hasaacas Ladies, replaces Juma Mgunda, whose contract expired. Mussa Mgosi will serve as Basigi's assistant coach.

The 52-year-old Ghanaian coach arrived in Tanzania over the weekend to finalize his move, having recently returned from leading the Black Princesses at the 2024 U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia.

Basigi brings a wealth of experience to Simba Queens, having previously coached the Black Queens and led Hasaacas Ladies to significant success.

The coach is set to make his debut in the upcoming Community Shield semi-final against Yanga Princess at the KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam.

Basigi’s coaching journey began at Hasaacas in 2003 when he earned his coaching badges, eventually taking charge of the men’s team.

He transitioned to coaching the women’s side in 2013, guiding them to victory in the inaugural Ghana Women's Premier League. Under his leadership, Hasaacas Ladies claimed five league titles and won the 2021 FA Cup.

Additionally, Basigi led the team to victory in the first edition of the WAFU B Women's Champions League and a runner-up finish in the CAF Women's Champions League.

Internationally, Basigi achieved a gold medal at the 2015 All-Africa Games, where he coached the Black Queens to triumph.

Simba Queens have struggled to qualify for the CAF Women's Champions League over the past two seasons, falling short in the CECAFA Women's Zonal qualifiers and missing out on third-place honors.

Despite their domestic dominance, the team has undergone multiple coaching changes since their qualification for the CAF Champions League in the 2021/22 season.

Basigi is now the fourth coach to take charge, with expectations high for his ability to guide Simba Queens back to continental competition.

Basigi’s appointment signals Simba Queens' ambition to reclaim their place in African football and build on their legacy in women’s football. The club hopes that his proven track record will help them return to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
