MINISTER for Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Ulega has urged herders to respect the country’s laws, including refraining from allowing their livestock to graze on farms.

Ulega made the remarks on Thursday at a public rally aimed at addressing concerns and challenges faced by livestock keepers in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region.

“It is important for pastoralists to develop good relations with others, abandon aggressive behaviour, adhere to the laws, and do not intentionally allow your livestock to enter others’ fields. This is a serious issue; if you do not follow the law, you will face consequences,” he said.

He further encouraged pastoralists to establish elder councils to help resolve conflicts and condemn few individuals who seek to tarnish the image of livestock keeping in the country.

Additionally, Ulega urged pastoralists to develop a structured approach to managing and selling their livestock.

He noted that doing so would not only help them generate income but also reduce the number of animals, thereby minimising conflicts with other land users.

In another development, minister Ulega directed experts from his ministry to provide education on best livestock practices and the opportunities available in the sector to leaders, farmers, and other groups in the district, emphasising the importance of an inclusive economy.
