SOS Resolves Unemployment Crisis with Full-Time Agriculture, Craft Initiatives

BOLDING initiative to combat the rising unemployment crisis among youth in Tanzania, SOS Children's Village organization has equipped more than 300 youth with full-time agriculture and craft training and equipment to ensure their self-employed initiative.

Handling, more than 20 million Shilling equipment for sustainable agriculture to Youth Yesterday, SOS Children's Village Mwanza Manager, John Masenza, emphasized the urgency of addressing the high youth unemployment rates. 

"We have decided to pull these young individuals out of the unemployment bracket by enhancing their income-generating capabilities through productive and sustainable agricultural practices," he stated. 

Masenza said the focus is particularly on irrigation farming, with provisions made for the youth to access relevant equipment crucial for efficient cultivation.

He said that yesterday SOS  handed over equipment and tools to beneficiaries involved in two projects, benefiting 35 youths and more than 300 in the current days.

"The support package included farming tools, electrical equipment, agricultural seeds, and sewing machines to those who lacked educational opportunities and all have gone through vocational training with such skills," he said.

Moreover, SOS has extended its support to 360 impoverished families through a health insurance scheme (CHF), showcasing a holistic approach to community development.

Philpo Joseph, a young farmer, noted his transition from manual irrigation methods to more advanced techniques, which he believes will enhance his productivity.

“With this equipment, I can significantly improve my output," he said.

Evodia Martine, a sewing trainee, expressed gratitude for receiving sewing machines, which have enabled her to start a small business, thus supporting her family and children’s education.

"This is a stepping stone for us," she remarked, urging fellow youth to embrace the opportunities presented.

The District Administrative Secretary for Ilemela, Mariam Msengi, praised the initiative and urged the beneficiaries to utilize the tools and training effectively.

She also announced upcoming opportunities for youth to access loans with no interest from municipalities to further their entrepreneurial ventures.

"This is a crucial time for you to seize these opportunities and build a sustainable future," she advised.
