THE government has reiterated the critical role of innovation and investment in technology in shaping the future of Tanzania's transport sector.
Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa made the remarks during an event to celebrate 35 years of excellence in trailer production and distribution by Superdoll.
Prof. Mbarawa emphasised the importance of fostering a favourable investment environment to stimulate economic growth in the transport sector.
He commended company for continued contribution to the automotive industry in the country.
"As we look into innovations in transport technology, we see how new developments such as lighter aluminium rims in tankers save fuel and improve efficiency," he said.
He noted that reducing fuel consumption directly enhances cost-effectiveness of transport sector, benefiting both the economy and consumers.
Prof. Mbarawa also reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding and modernising the nation's transport infrastructure.
He highlighted significant investments in road and railway networks, including the ongoing $11.2 billion SGR railway project which aims to improve connectivity between key cities and regions within Tanzania as well as with neighbouring countries.
"Transport is the backbone of economic development," Mbarawa emphasised, stressing the sector's crucial role in connecting businesses, farmers and industries while facilitating regional trade across east, central and southern Africa.
He further mentioned the government’s investments in port automation and the integration of operations at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara, aiming to position Tanzania as a leading transport and logistics hub for East Africa.
As the country continues to invest in infrastructure, Mbarawa expressed confidence that Tanzania's strategic location, surrounded by six landlocked countries, makes it a vital gateway for regional trade, particularly through its ports.
"The efforts align with the government's broader vision to transform Tanzania into a leading transport hub, supporting sustainable growth and regional integration," he said.
Mbarawa also touched on the potential for further advancements in the sector, such as the adoption of super single tires, a technology commonly used in countries like Germany and Norway. He urged industry stakeholders to educate policymakers and the public on the benefits of these tires for enhancing efficiency and sustainability in transportation.
As the government continues to prioritise innovation and investment, Mbarawa reassured investors that Tanzania remains open for business, with clear commitment to creating conducive environment for growth in transport and other sectors.
