TRANSPORT Minister Prof Makame Mbarawa and Air Tanzania Co. Ltd (ATCL) director general, Peter Ulanga, are today scheduled to receive the airline’s inaugural flight to Iringa, marking a significant milestone in the its expansion and efforts to improve regional connectivity.
The flight is part of the recently launched Mtwara route, which will now be accessible through direct services to Dar es Salaam, connecting the southern regions with the airline’s extensive domestic and international network.
ATCL’s chief of operations, Arif Jinnah said the new route is expected to bolster trade, tourism, and economic opportunities in the region, providing easier access to key markets.
“The start of flights to and from Iringa signifies the airline’s commitment to strengthening Tanzania’s aviation sector, with officials hopeful that this expansion will have a lasting impact on the region’s connectivity and economic growth,” he said.
Speaking earlier during the launch of the Mtwara route, Mtwara District Commissioner, Abdallah Mwaipaya, highlighted the vital role that improved air connectivity will play in the region’s development.
He stressed that the government is committed to making Mtwara a key economic gateway for the southern regions of Tanzania, a goal that the new ATCL route is well-positioned to support.
“We are delighted to see the fruits of our efforts in improving Mtwara’s infrastructure,” Mwaipaya said. “The upgraded airport ensures smooth operations for incoming flights, and today’s arrival of ATCL aircraft is a testament to how far we’ve come.”
In his remarks Jinnah, also praised the new route, noting that the inaugural flight was fully booked, underscoring the demand for air travel to and from Mtwara.
He added that the new service will not only improve convenience for local travellers but also facilitate easier connections to regional and international destinations.
“This is a major step forward in enhancing travel for both business and leisure passengers. Our passengers can now seamlessly connect to over 25 destinations both within Tanzania and beyond,” said Jinnah.
The introduction of Mtwara route is part of ATCL’s broader strategy to expand its network across the country, offering more direct connections to cities such as Dodoma, Mwanza and Mbeya. Additionally, the airline has expanded its reach to international markets, including Dubai, Mumbai and several African capitals.
