The much-anticipated Season 15 of Tanzania's Bongo Star Search (BSS) has officially launched, marking a significant milestone as the competition expands beyond Tanzania’s borders to include five additional African countries.

Aspiring talents from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will now have the chance to showcase their musical prowess on one of East Africa's biggest platforms.

Speaking at the launch event held in Dar es Salaam, Benchmark Production Director Rita Paulsen expressed her long-standing dream of making BSS a regional competition. Paulsen shared her excitement about the expansion, which she noted was fueled by the encouragement of country's  President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, who acknowledged her contributions to youth development.

“I am overjoyed. These are not tears of sadness; they are tears of joy. Bongo Star Search will now reach across East Africa, giving young people in six countries the chance to shine," Paulsen said emotionally. “Since President Samia recognized my efforts, I feel inspired to do even more. It’s not common to find leaders who truly see your contribution.”

She further noted that the initial phases of the competition will feature on-ground auditions in Tanzania (in Arusha, Manyara, Mwanza, and Dar es Salaam) and Kenya and Uganda, beginning on November 9 and For participants in Rwanda, Burundi, and the DRC, auditions will be held online to ensure accessibility across all regions.

David Malisa, Director of Marketing and Content at Startimes Media, said that as the Bss competition’s primary sponsor, am overjoyed by the six-year partnership that has elevated young talents across East Africa. 

He confirmed that the new season’s episodes will air starting December first , leading up to the grand finale on February 28, which will be broadcast live.

“Each country will have five participants who will travel to Dar es Salaam to compete in a boot camp setting. BSS will be aired on ST Bongo in Tanzania, Makala TV in Uganda, and ST Swahili in Kenya, all on Startimes,” Malisa announced, encouraging viewers to stay subscribed to enjoy the entire season.

Malisa also emphasized the importance of music for young people as a tool for growth, resilience, and self-discovery. “Music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a powerful resource that influences emotions, inspires action, and transforms experiences. For young people, music can be especially beneficial, helping them to navigate the challenges of personal growth and intense emotions.”

Highlighting music's proven mental health benefits, he added, “Research shows that music reduces stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. This season of BSS aims not only to find talented individuals but to empower youth with the transformative power of music.”

The stage is set for a vibrant season that promises to uncover some of East Africa’s brightest musical talents, fostering a new generation of artists with a platform that celebrates their voices across the continent.
