As the countdown begins to the 23rd edition of the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager International Marathon on February 23, 2025, this year marks a significant milestone of more than two decades of steadfast sponsorship from Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, which has been present since the inaugural event in 2004.
This sponsorship transforms the marathon into the largest sporting event in Tanzania and within the sporting calendar of the world’s governing body, IAAF, while solidifying its status as a beacon for promoting tourism and community engagement.
The marathon attracts over 12,000 participants from more than 56 countries and an equal number of spectators, featuring colorful and entertaining events, including live music performances from high-profile musicians. It has indeed grown into a premier event on the international stage.
During the recent launch at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, highlighted the marathon's potential to boost local and international tourism as spectators enjoy clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
“This is such a big milestone,” she remarks, underscoring the event’s ability to draw attention to Tanzania’s breathtaking attractions, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti.
“We are proud of the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon, as it proves to be the largest event in the country, bringing together over 12,000 participants from more than 56 countries—all of whom are potential tourists. This is a significant milestone,” says the minister.
She states that the ministry will collaborate with the marathon to advertise tourist attractions before and after the event to ensure they reach as many people as possible.
She further notes that the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon contributes enormously to sports tourism, greatly assisting the government in implementing its tourism and sports policies over the past 23 years.
“I congratulate all the sponsors led by Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, the main sponsor. They make us proud of what we celebrate today in marathon history,” she says.
“Without you, this would not be possible,” she emphasizes.
The minister calls on participants and spectators to use the marathon season to tour various attractions, including the magnificent Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar, and other destinations.
For the past 23 years, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager plays an instrumental role in this success story, being the longest sponsorship ever in marathon history in Tanzania and probably Africa.
This sponsorship not only lifts the status of this spectacular event but also helps groom thousands of local and international runners, giving them opportunities for international marathon platforms.
Khensani Mkhombo, the Marketing Director of Tanzania Breweries Limited, expresses pride in the enduring sponsorship, noting its importance in promoting not only local runners but also Tanzanian culture and tourism.
“As the main sponsor, we are honored to be part of this significant event that achieves tremendous success over the years. We are among the founding members and main sponsors since its inception in 2003, and together we have made dramatic strides as we launch the 23rd edition.”
“We started with fewer runners from a few countries, but now we are talking of thousands from more than 56 countries celebrating this milestone,” she adds. “This two decade-long commitment is not just a business venture; it represents a shared vision for enhancing the country's sporting landscape.”
She calls on participants to register on time, as registration is already open online via www.kilimanjaromarathon.com and via tigopesa.
Once again, she promises that the weekend will be filled with amazing activities surrounding the marathon, encouraging participants to plan for an extended stay in Moshi to enjoy the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager hospitality and activations taking place in and around the town, including on marathon day.
The marathon’s impressive growth is a testament to this partnership. With a total prize purse of Tsh53.5 million allocated for the Full and Half Marathons, the event promises to attract even more talent and enthusiasm next year.
The organizers encourage early registration, reminding participants of the vibrant atmosphere and community spirit that define this annual gathering.
As the event approaches, both participants and spectators are encouraged to immerse themselves in the local culture and attractions. The marathon season presents a unique opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes of Moshi and beyond, enriching the overall experience of this celebrated event.
With a legacy built on decades of excellence, the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager International Marathon stands as a symbol of partnership, community, and the spirit of Tanzania. As it continues to evolve, this marathon champions athleticism and reinforces the nation’s commitment to tourism and social welfare.
"We have done it for the last 23 years and it keeps getting better hence our continued commitment to the event," she gives the assurance.
