SIMBA SC head coach Fadlu Davids has expressed confidence that his team’s narrow 1-0 win over Pamba Jiji FC in the NBC Premier League has provided valuable preparation for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup group stage opener against Angola’s Bravos do Maquis.
The match, held at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza, showcased Simba’s tactical discipline and determination.
A 22nd-minute penalty converted by Leonel Ateba, following a foul by Pamba Jiji defender Christopher Oruchum, secured the crucial victory.
Ateba confidently dispatched the spot-kick, giving Simba the lead and, ultimately, all three points.
Despite dominating the first half, Simba struggled to extend their advantage as Pamba Jiji mounted a spirited defense.
The second half saw the hosts pushing for an equalizer with quick counter-attacks, but Simba’s backline and goalkeeper Moussa Camara held firm, preserving the narrow lead.
The victory elevated Simba to the top of the Premier League standings with 28 points from 11 matches, boasting nine wins, one draw, and one loss.
With domestic duties momentarily set aside, Simba now shift their focus to their continental campaign.
Simba will host Bravos do Maquis at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday in their CAF Confederation Cup Group A opener.
The group also features Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien and Algeria’s CS Constantine, presenting Simba with a challenging path to the knockout stages.
After the Pamba Jiji match, Davids (pictured) highlighted the importance of the game in fine-tuning his team’s readiness for continental competition.
“This game was essential for preparing the squad for the CAF Confederation Cup,” Davids said. “It was a tough encounter, but the intensity and physicality were exactly what we needed to ensure the players are match-ready.”
He added that while players returning from international duty would integrate soon, the rest of the squad benefitted greatly from the test.
Simba resumed training upon their return to Dar es Salaam, with a focus on refining tactics and strategies. The home advantage at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium will be crucial, as Simba aim to begin their group stage campaign with a win.
“Our group is tough, with strong opponents like CS Sfaxien and CS Constantine, but we are confident. Starting with a home win is vital, and we are ready to fight for every point,” Davids stated.
Simba’s rich continental experience, coupled with the form of key players like Jean Charles Ahoua, Ateba, and Che Malone Fondoh, positions them as strong contenders.
The team’s recent success in the Premier League has also boosted morale ahead of their CAF campaign.
Group A promises stiff competition. CS Sfaxien, a three-time CAF Confederation Cup champion, and CS Constantine, a North African powerhouse, will be formidable adversaries. Bravos do Maquis, though less experienced, are expected to be resilient challengers.
Simba supporters, renowned for their passionate support, are anticipated to create an electrifying atmosphere at the stadium.
The Msimbazi Street giants aim to build on their impressive record in African competitions and make a strong statement in their opening fixture.
With momentum on their side, Simba are ready to prove their mettle and begin their CAF Confederation Cup journey on a high note.
