IN an effort to raise awareness and advocate for the well-being of the girl child in Tanzania, the Tanzania Education Network (TEN/MET), a coalition of 253 civil society organisations, is set to host a special marathon.

This event, scheduled on October 11, will bring together over 250 participants who can choose to participate in either a 10 km or a 5 km run. It will be conducted at Farasi grounds in Oyster Bay as part of the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

In its statement, TEN/MET stated that the marathon aims to spotlight critical issues affecting girls' education in Tanzania, including the need for greater community awareness regarding the Re-entry Policy.

The policy allows young mothers to return to school after pregnancy or other unavoidable circumstances, ensuring that education remains accessible for all girls.

Additionally, the network plans to emphasise the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments that foster the educational journey of the girl child.

Participation in the marathon is free of charge and open to everyone who is willing and able to join. The network encourages the public to come together to support this important cause by participating in the run and helping to raise awareness about the challenges girls face in accessing education.

In addition to the runs, the event will feature various activities aimed at engaging the community and promoting dialogue around girls’ education. Participants and attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the Re-entry Policy, hear from speakers advocating for girls’ rights and connect with organisations dedicated to improving educational outcomes for girls in Tanzania.

The marathon not only serves as a platform for physical fitness but also as a rallying point for community engagement and advocacy, highlighting the need for collective action to support the girl child in Tanzania.
