Temeke's Climate Action Plan: 200 trees planted at Madenge primary school

THE government’s campaign to plant I.5 million trees every year has received a boost after Jubilee Life Insurance in collaboration with Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) plant 200 tree seedlings at Madenge Primary school.

Temeke district commissioner,  Sixtus Mapunda, who graced the event as the guest of honor, in Dar es Salaam today, acknowledged the two organisation’s drive as it support's the districts' Climate Action Plan of making sure that each student plants 100 trees.

“Am glad that Jubilee Life Insurance and Agha Khan Foundation joined the movement by planting 200 tree seedlings at Madenge Primary School. If managed well its my hope that in three years Temeke and Dar es Salaam will be different,” he said.

He added: “To make this project successful, every student from standard one to seven should plant 100 trees and make it a successful assignment.”

DC’s directives come amid the fourth environmental report released this year indicates that Tanzania loses an average of 24,151 hectares of forest annually.
According to him, the community should challenge themselves into making sure that they make a benefit out of every tree seedling planted, citing on vegetables, fruits and shadow trees.

He further applauded the AKF and Jubilee Insurance Tanzania for supporting the government’s efforts in added climate change challenges.

Dr Harold Adamson, Chief Executive Officer for Jubilee Insurance Tanzania, said apart from doing best in insurance industry, the company’s goal is to be champion in conserving environment by implementing small-scale tree-planting projects.

He added that these trees will not only help address climate change but will also improve the school environment.The Country Director for AKF, Atteeya Sumar, said the foundation has set the target to reduce carbon emission to net zero by 2030 and planting 50 million trees globally.

She added: “So far in the past two years, AKF in Tanzania has planted 125 micro-forests with millions of trees, most of these micro-forests are in schools in Lindi, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.”

Hadija Hussein, Madenge Primary School, Head Teacher, said the planted trees would help the pupils to learn the environmental conservation issues practically.
