VARIOUS investors have declared interest in Tanzania’s clean energy and carbon trade at the 29th conference of the parties (COP29) of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in the central Asian city of Baku in Azerbaijan.
Jackson Kiswaga (Kalenga), the chairman of the Water and Environment standing committee of the National Assembly, said here yesterday that the delegation had met with various stakeholders who showed interest in the two areas.
He said current investment policies also encourage a range of investors. Noting that the Baku conference, teeming with environmentalists, a number of investors feel that it is the right time to cooperate with the government on the key agenda of environmental protection by promoting the use of clean energy.
Investment is likely to be directed to other electricity generating sources like solar and wind, projects that will help in dealing with climate change impacts, he said.
The conference has brought together investors showing interest in cooperating with the country in the carbon business, where the Vice President’s Office (VPO) has already prepared rules and guidelines for managing the trade, to benefit the community.
The global conference has made it possible to meet with development stakeholders showing commitment on making available the best technology to stimulate sustainable agriculture, he further noted.
"These COP meetings are important in connecting us with the world," he said, asserting that the country was getting many opportunities not noticed earlier.
He was of the view that the government needs to participate in other meetings after the current global conference is concluded, to get more time for the delegates to meet with stakeholders from different countries, to seek out more opportunities.
