Knee and hip surgery from the famous hospital YASHODA located in Hyderabad India, Dr. Ram Mohan Reddy and his colleagues are expected to arrive in the country this month to provide specialist knee and hip surgery.

The doctors will perform the surgery in collaboration with local knee and hip surgeons at Muhimbilita National Hospital - Mloganzila branch where the specialist treatment will take place.

The Executive Director of Global Medicare, which is the agent of medical tourism in the country, Abdulmalik Mollel, said the doctors will perform surgery at Mloganzila from the 26th  to the 28th of August.

Mollel said the expert doctors will collaborate with the local experts in the camp to build the capacity of the local doctors by exchanging experiences that will give the local doctors more training that will enable them to perform such surgery even after the foreign doctor leaves.

"Last year we held a surgery camp like this and it was a great success because there were more than 2,300 people who needed this service and our doctors did a great job in collaboration with foreign doctors and we expect this expert doctor in Hip and knee surgery will perform surgery to many people who will attend the camp to undergo a preliminary examination," he said

He said that for a long time, Tanzanians with health problems were going abroad for treatment, but after the government invested heavily in the health sector, many Tanzanians have been treated here in the country.

Mollel said that the government has invested a lot in medical equipment based on modern technology as found in major countries in the world and has trained super specialists in various fields of medicine.

"Tanzania is currently equipped with enough modern equipment and qualified specialists like those in India and elsewhere, so now is the right time for foreign qualified doctors to come to Tanzania to build capacity with their local colleagues who have been doing a great job, ” said Mollel who is also the Director of Global Education Link (GEL).

He said the services of medical doctors available in the country have attracted many people from neighboring countries to come here for treatment instead of going to foreign countries to follow such treatment which it takes a lot of time and costs a lot compared to if they come to Tanzania.

"The coming of these medical doctors is a very great opportunity because our doctors will take the technologies they have and if we have the skills that they don’t have they will learn from our doctors. With the investment made by the government in the health sector Tanzania is now the center of medical tourism for East African countries and south of the Sahara desert," said Mollel.

"YASHODA is one of the largest hospitals in the world located in India with 4,000 beds and it is doing very well.  In May 2023, a delegation of expert doctors from Tanzania went to YASHODA to learn what makes them different from what we have, we learned what makes people around the world prefer to go for treatment to India," he said

In addition, Mollel said the goal of the delegation was to learn what has made them champions in medical tourism in the world and come to implement what they have done and get the reputation of being the center of medical tourism and receive patients from different countries in the world.

"One of the successes of the visit we made to India last year is the arrival of doctors from YASHODA, which is one of the hospitals we visited with first-class quality and standards in the world and has smart doctors with a large network in the world due to their expertise," he said.

"Global Medicare, which manages the best health services for those who need to go abroad and those who come from abroad to Tanzania. All the preparations for the camp have been completed and all our doctors are ready for the camp,” he said

He said the main goal is to make Tanzania a center for medical tourism as President Samia Suluhu Hassan has invested heavily in medical equipment and training local doctors by increasing their capacity through the Samia Scholarship program.
