Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborating with the Tanzanian government and other stakeholders to ensure the country's steady progress in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The steadfast resolve was articulated by GGML's Public Relations and Communications Manager, Stephen Mhando, speaking on behalf of the company's Managing Director, during the prestigious awards ceremony organized by the Global Compact Network Tanzania (GCNT).

The event recognized businesses and organizations that have demonstrated exemplary leadership in driving the implementation of SDGs and delivering positive impact on communities and the environment.

Held in Dar es Salaam at the end of the week, the awards ceremony witnessed GGML securing two significant accolades, a testament to the company's tireless efforts in realizing and fulfilling these transformative goals.

"Cognizant of the importance of the SDGs, GGML, as a frontrunner in implementing critical aspects of these goals, has continued to sponsor these awards to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Tanzanians in achieving these sustainable objectives," Mhando affirmed.

According to Mhando, GGML's commitment to the SDGs aligns seamlessly with the company's core principles of sustainability, excellency, and collaboration.

"This is one of the key reasons why GGML has made substantial contributions towards the accomplishment of several pivotal SDGs, including Goal 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation. Through initiatives like the Geita Water Project, GGML has invested 6 million US Dollars to provide clean water to over 150,000 Geita residents, improving access to safe water by 70 per cent in the region," he explained.

Furthermore, Mhando highlighted the company's implementation of SDG 8, which focuses on Decent Work and Economic Growth. GGML has created thousands of jobs, supported local businesses, and actively contributed to Tanzania's economic development.

"For SDG 4 on Quality Education, GGML has invested in building schools and developing educational programs that empower the next generation of leaders," he added.

Addressing the company's commitment to SDG 13 on Climate Action, Mhando stated, "GGML has ensured that its operations meet the highest environmental standards and has invested in sustainable technologies, such as the recent launch of a 33/11KV Substation, a unique milestone for the company in utilizing the national grid electricity supplied by TANESCO."

Discussing the significance of the awards, Mhando emphasized that they signify the organization's accountability, recognizing the substantial work being undertaken by all companies in Tanzania towards a sustainable future.

"As we celebrate these achievements, we aim to reaffirm our commitment to working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders to ensure that no one is left behind in this journey towards sustainable development," he said.
Mhando further highlighted that GGML, a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, supports the principles of the United Nations Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. In July 2024 the company reconfirmed its commitment through a business application to the United Nations Secretary General to officially join the United Nations Global Compact through the Tanzania Chapter, the Global Compact Network Tanzania

Speaking at the event, Dr. Lorah Madete, the Deputy Executive Secretary - Business and Innovation from the Planning Commission, commended the establishment of the awards, noting that they have been a driving force in enabling Tanzania and various companies to recognize their progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals.

"We will continue to engage the private sector to ensure that their businesses are bringing positive results in the implementation of the SDGs for the community. Therefore, my appeal to various companies is to continue joining the GCNT network to expand their businesses, gain recognition, and become more competitive," Dr. Madete emphasized.

GGML's unwavering commitment to the SDGs and its tangible contributions across multiple fronts serve as a shining example of how the private sector can play a pivotal role in propelling Tanzania towards a sustainable future. As the country marches steadily towards the 2030 deadline, GGML's leadership and collaborative efforts will undoubtedly inspire others to join the collective journey towards a more prosperous and environmentally-conscious Tanzania.
