MINISTER for Works Abdallah Ulega has directed Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to ensure value for money in the execution of infrastructure projects.
The projects include roads, bridges, ferries, government buildings and airports.
Ulega issued the directive on Thursdays during opening of the ministry’s Workers’ Council meeting in Singida Region, highlighting the importance of efficient management and proper allocation of government funds in the initiatives.
“I urge you to continue supporting the vision of the head of state by ensuring that value for money is evident in all the projects you oversee,” he said.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to maximising the use of public resources.
The minister also instructed TANROADS to expedite repairs on infrastructure damaged by the recent El-Nino rains and Cyclone Hidaya.
The damage, estimated to exceed 868bn/- has created a pressing need for swift and effective repair work.
Additionally, Ulega directed ministry leaders, in collaboration with the National Construction Council (NCC), to fully implement strategies aimed at empowering local contractors. “This initiative will enhance the capacity of local contractors, ensuring they benefit from large-scale projects,” he explained.
The minister also encouraged construction professionals to use the meeting as an opportunity to discuss solutions for alleviating traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam.
He highlighted the potential of the Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in easing traffic flow and urged the sector to explore ways to enhance its impact on economic growth and reduce congestion during peak hours.
Ulega further stressed the importance of professionalism, expertise, and integrity in the construction sector, urging staff to steer clear of corrupt practices during project execution.
Singida Regional Commissioner Halima Dendego commended the Ministry of Works for its efforts in improving the region’s infrastructure, particularly the construction of tarmacked roads that have greatly enhanced transportation and logistics.
Workers’ Council Chairperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Ambassador Aisha Amour, noted that the ministry makes progress on key projects, including the Msalato International Airport, the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge, and the BRT Bridge in Dar es Salaam.
The meeting also focused on reviewing and approving the Ministry of Works’ budget for the 2025/26 financial year, which will soon be presented to the National Assembly.
Representatives from the ministry and its affiliated institutions attended, reflecting a unified commitment to advancing Tanzania’s infrastructure.
