The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving infrastructure at the Amboni Caves in a bid to attract more tourists to this geological and cultural site.
Mariam Kobelo, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Tourism and Marketing Services at NCAA, made the remarks during the conclusion of a domestic tourism campaign at Amboni Caves. The campaign, dubbed Diko la Amboni (Amboni Cuisine), coincided with Valentine’s Day.
"We have a comprehensive plan in place, which includes upgrading infrastructure, improving the revenue collection system, creating rest areas, and establishing campsites for visitors who wish to stay overnight," she said.
She further noted that Amboni is one of five new conservation areas recently brought under NCAA management, alongside the Mbozi Meteorite and Mumba Cave—an important archaeological site near Lake Eyasi in Arusha Region, known for its Middle Stone Age deposits.
"To enhance the visitor experience, NCAA has allocated a substantial budget for infrastructure improvements at Amboni Caves. Planned upgrades include the establishment of a campsite and designated relaxation and recreation areas, allowing tourists to fully immerse themselves in the site’s unique environment," she added.
Wrapping up the campaign with a cooking competition, she said, also aimed to boost income for small-scale entrepreneurs in Tanga District.
Tanga District Commissioner Jafari Kubecha, who was the guest of honor at the event, commended NCAA’s leadership for its innovative approach and noted that the campaign had significantly boosted domestic tourism in the region.
"I extend my congratulations to NCAA for their outstanding efforts in promoting tourism at Amboni Caves. The Tanga District government will continue to collaborate with you in developing and preserving these unique caves," Kubecha stated.
The event featured a cooking competition for Tanga women, with renowned artist and entrepreneur Shilole serving as a judge. Participants received prizes from NCAA, including cash and gas cylinders, in support of the government’s initiative to promote the use of clean cooking energy.
Since assuming management of Amboni Caves in 2020, NCAA has implemented key improvements, including the installation of special lighting and drifts to enhance visitor safety and accessibility, even during periods of water accumulation within the caves.
