The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) marked a significant milestone by announcing the return of the DSE Members Awards 2024 (DMA).

This year’s theme, “Embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Principles for Sustainable Capital Markets,” underscores the event’s focus on fostering sustainable practices. The awards, paused since 2020 due to the global pandemic, have made a celebrated comeback.

DSE joined the United Nations-Sustainable Stock Exchanges (UNSSE) Initiative as a Partner Exchange in 2016. This partnership represented a vital commitment to embedding sustainability into governance, operations, and the broader Tanzanian market framework.

"We are delighted to reach this milestone after a three-year pause of the DSE awards," said DSE Chief Executive Officer Peter Nalitolela during the 2024 awards night in Dar es Salaam. “These awards were introduced as part of our dedication to recognizing exceptional practices in ESG among our members. They are more than ceremonial—they aim to inspire meaningful action across our ecosystem."

Nalitolela highlighted that globally, and especially in East Africa, ESG principles are shaping investment choices and driving a fundamental transformation of capital markets toward sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economies.

"The world is a unique gift, and if we destroy it, we undermine our ability to conduct business," Nalitolela emphasized. "It's essential for the public to understand that business isn't just about profits; it's about sustainable practices that ensure the well-being of future generations. Considering the environment, society, and business integrity is vital, and these awards motivate our members to excel."

DSE’s 2024 awards celebrated members who showed genuine commitment to ESG principles. According to Nalitolela, these efforts affirm that environmental stewardship, good governance, and social responsibility are foundational for a thriving modern market. "Adopting these principles strengthens our capital markets and contributes to a future that benefits everyone," he added.

The DSE Members Awards 2024 included ten categories: Best Listed Company of the Year under the Main Investment Market Segment (MIMS) – Industrial and Allied Category; Best Company of the Year under MIMS – Banking and Investment Category; Best Listed Company of the Year under MIMS – Commercial Services Category; and Best Listed Company of the Year under the Enterprise Growth Market Segment (EGM). Other categories included Best Stockbroker of the Year, Best Upcoming Stockbroker, Best Nominated Advisor (NOMAD) of the Year.
