NORWEGIAN Ambassador to Tanzania Tone Tinnes recently made a three-day visit to Ihemi and Kilombero clusters under Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) and called for enhanced sustainable agriculture, food security and economic development.

While in Njombe Region, the envoy observed the progress in productive agriculture, coinciding with the evolution of SAGCOT into Agricultural Growth Corridors of Tanzania (AGCOT). This new initiative seeks to extend coverage to every agricultural corridor within the country.

She underscored Norway’s commitment to fostering agricultural development through responsible, private-sector-led and environmentally conscious initiatives, aligning with SAGCOT's core objectives.

In a joint press statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Ambassador also reflected on the 60 years of diplomatic ties between Tanzania and Norway, saying the ties were still strong.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan's historic visit to Norway recently witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on food security and agriculture,” she said, affirming Norway's sustained support for SAGCOT.

She said Tanzania has undergone a significant transformation in the agriculture sector since 2011.

“Partners like SAGCOT catalyse innovation for enhanced food security, economic prosperity, and sustainability. The insights gained from the fields clearly indicate that the newest challenge is scaling up valuable initiatives," she said.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima expressed gratitude to Norway for its longstanding support to Tanzania. He also thanked Norway for its unwavering backing of SAGCOT throughout its development.

Acting Iringa Regional Administrative Secretary Elias Luvanda provided a comprehensive update on the progress and obstacles in the implementation of SAGCOT initiative in the region.

In a briefing to the envoy, Luvanda emphasized the collective achievements and persistent challenges in agriculture development within the Ihemi cluster, which includes Iringa and Njombe regions.

He said SAGCOT initiative has catalyzed a productive partnership between various stakeholders, including farmers, investors, businesspersons and government authorities, leading to remarkable strides in agricultural productivity and sustainability across several districts.

Earlier, SAGCOT Centre chief executive officer Geoffrey Kirenga said since its inception in 2010, Norway has been a steadfast supporter of SAGCOT.

“We deeply appreciate the ongoing support and partnership with the Norwegian government, which has been fundamental in our endeavours to propel agricultural innovation and empowerment of smallholder farmers,” he said.

According to Kirenga, the collaboration has been pivotal through clusters, compacts and other innovative models, enabling SAGCOT to enhance productivity and sustainability in agriculture sector.
