UKEREWE District Commissioner, Christopher Ngubiagai, has launched an education programme tackling underage drinking in an initiative aimed at promoting responsible decision-making among youth in the district and Mwanza Region as a whole.
Speaking during launch here yesterday, Ngubiagai said the campaign is designed to raise awareness among pupils about the dangers of alcohol use.
Commending the programme dubbed SMASHED, the DC highlighted its importance in empowering young people to make informed and responsible choices regarding alcohol consumption.
“Underage drinking affects not just individuals but entire communities. This programme is a critical step in safeguarding our youth,” he said.
Unveiled in 2021, the initiative has already reached over 30,000 pupils across Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Kilimanjaro regions. With its expansion to Mwanza, more young people are expected to gain essential knowledge to help them make healthier life choices.
SMASHED campaign uses interactive, theatre-based education to engage pupils and raise awareness on the risks associated with alcohol misuse. By collaborating with schools, local governments, and youth-focused organizations, the initiative equips pupils with practical skills and a deeper understanding of the consequences of underage drinking.
