TANZANIANS have been urged to use clean energy, particularly gas, to protect their health, environment and save time for economic activities.
The government has been actively promoting the use of clean cooking energy and recently launched the National Clean Cooking Strategy 2024-2034, aiming to ensure that 80 percent of the population adopts cleaner energy sources by 2030.
Shaban Fundi, Marketing and Sales Manager of Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited, made the call in Arusha Region recently while addressing the company’s agents from across the country at the 2025 annual general meeting.
The meeting, which brought together agents from all regions, aimed to set a strategic direction for delivering quality services to Tanzanians while encouraging the adoption of clean cooking energy.
The agents' meeting was attended by various company leaders, including the Managing Director, Araman Benoit.
“Our company has agents in various regions, districts, and even rural areas. These agents play a crucial role in ensuring that clean cooking energy reaches different parts of the country, serving Tanzanians,” said Fundi.
He added: “We are proud to have well-equipped agents in every region, and that’s why we are committed to expanding the availability of clean energy across Tanzania, including Zanzibar.”
Fundi said the meeting was crucial as it set the direction for 2025 while encouraging citizens to embrace clean cooking energy. He said the firm is prepared to provide quality services to every Tanzanian.
Shuea Omar Khamisi, the company’s Manager in Zanzibar, emphasized that the annual meeting provided an opportunity to review progress and strategize for the upcoming year.
“Our major agents in the regions represent us in the market and serve as key liaisons with customers,” he said, highlighting the significant increase in clean energy usage in Zanzibar over the past five years.
“In 2020, clean energy usage in Zanzibar accounted for 7.7 percent of total distribution, but by 2024, this figure has risen to 26.5 percent. This means that in 2020, consumption stood at 3,600 tonnes, whereas by 2024, it had increased to 12,400 tonnes,” she remarked.
She added that the trend reflects a growing awareness among Zanzibar residents, who are increasingly transitioning from polluting fuels to cleaner alternatives.
“May I urge Zanzibar residents to stop using firewood and charcoal, which are hazardous to both health and the environment. Many of us suffer from a number of diseases due to exposure to dirty fuels, thus ending up spending a lot of money on medical treatment,” he stressed.
