THE Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) in Mwanza Region plans to remove all bumps dotting Airport Road after erection of traffic lights that control vehicles and facilitate pedestrian crossing.

The agency will continue identifying other areas in Mwanza city where bumps cause disturbance to road users for removal.

This was said here recently by Richard Ruyango, acting Tanroads Mwanza regional manager, when speaking to this writer in an interview.

Ruyango said that the bumps were needed to serve the purpose of speed control when the road had no traffic lights but that is no longer the case.

“The bumps currently cause unnecessary nuisance to road users,” he said.

Citing an example, he said that when traffic lights indicate for vehicles to pass, drivers find it difficult to do so speedily because of the bumps, noting that situation does not allow effectiveness of the lights.

Ruyango said that motorists should stop when lights indicate for pedestrians to pass and use the road comfortably when the green light is on.

He said that the government strives to ensure that people use roads without disturbance throughout as they move from one point to another for socioeconomic development.

“It is true that pumps are important for road safety but they are not needed where there are traffic lights and pedestrian crossings,” he said.
