PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan commends Beatrice Bandawe, Managing Editor of Nipashe Newspaper, for clinching the prestigious 2024 Women in News Laureate Leadership Award. She becomes the first laureate from Africa, setting an inspiring milestone.

The head of state made the remarks today June 18, 2024 during the second forum on Media Development Sector held in Dar es Salaam today.

The President said she recognizes Tanzanians who won with Bandawe inclusive, urging media practitioners in the country to continue practicing their role as they have been trusted and bring honour to the country

"I would like to acknowledge some exceptional individuals among us, with special mention to Beatrice Bandawe, who has been honored with the inaugural 2024 Women in News Laureate Leadership Award," she declared.

Bandawe's influence on journalism transcends her role as a gender advocate, making a lasting impact. Her impactful journalism in Tanzania sparked policy changes, exemplified by The Guardian Limited's investigative reporting that prompted significant reforms in pension fund policies.

Under Bandawe’s leadership, The Guardian amped up its reporting on underrepresented groups – including people with disabilities – and increased capacity building training to ensure fair representation.

As an alumnus of WAN-IFRA’s Women in News Leadership Accelerator program, Bandawe dedicates herself to training, coaching, and mentoring journalists, with a focus on empowering women to successfully navigate the complexities of modern newsrooms.

At the Guardian, she has led research initiatives on Gender-Based Violence and collaborated with her team to formulate a comprehensive Gender Balance guideline. This initiative challenges stereotypes and combats discrimination against female journalists, fostering a more inclusive media landscape.
