THE Tanzanian Parliament has distanced itself from what has been described as claims of salary increment allegedly made during a public rally organized by Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) in Babati, Manyara region.

In a statement issued by the Parliamentary Communication and International Relations Unit on March 23, 2024, it was noted that during the rally, the party's national chairperson, Freeman Mbowe, asserted that MPs' salaries had been increased in 2023 from 13m/- to 18m/-

According to the statement, Mbowe's claims are reported to have spread on social media through a short video.

"We wish to inform the public that these claims are fabrications and misinformation, as no MP has received a salary increment as alleged. Therefore, we urge citizens to disregard these claims, which aim to sow unrest and create division between citizens and their representatives," the statement emphasized.

The Parliament clarifies that salary increments are budgetary matters, and no such procedure has been undertaken to increase MP's salaries.
