PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called on leaders of political parties participating in the civic polls to be champions in maintaining peace and condemn any incitement for unrest.

The premier made this appeal at the general assembly and symposium on the importance of peace ahead of the local government elections, urging that party leaders encourage their members and supporters to participate in the polls.

They also need to prioritize the preservation of peace and harmony, he said, remarking that all those registered on the local government election voter list ought to turn up to cast their ballots at respective polling stations on Wednesday, November 27.

“This day will be observed as a special public holiday for voting purposes,” he stated at an event organized by the Shia Muslim community, reiterating appeals by President Samia Suluhu Hassan that religious leaders need to persist in promoting peace.

Party leaders need to motivate their members to participate in the election in like manner as upholding peace, he said, stressing that every eligible Tanzanian should turn out to vote to elect local leaders. 

They are a crucial link in community harmony, locally based officials like village chairmen, street leaders, sub-village leaders and village government or neighbourhood committee members.

“Remember, voting is a constitutional right and duty of every Tanzanian,” he stated, acknowledging the significant contributions of religious denominations and institutions in fostering the civic ethos.

He expressed acute regard for their spiritual influence and the contributions theys make in the realisation of government efforts to deliver accessible social services to the people.

Sheikh Alhad Musa Salum, the chairman of the Inter-Religious Peace Committee of Tanzania, in his remarks praised the religious community for its efforts in canvassing for privileging peace and stability in the country. 

“I am a true witness to the initiatives of the Shia community to ensure Tanzania's peace and security continue to strengthen,” the veteran organiser declared.
