FUDAN University in Shanghai, China, has pledged to collaborate with Zanzibar Health Research Institute (ZAHRI) on research initiatives to help bring major reforms in human health.

Prof Zhenghong Yuan, Fudan University Vice Chancellor, made the commitment yesterday during a meeting with ZAHRI Director General Dr Mayasa Salum Ali at the institute’s headquarters in Binguni, Central, and Unguja District.

Prof Zhenghong highlighted Fudan University’s extensive experience in health research, supported by its 14 hospitals that provide comprehensive medical services.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last year in China, focusing on professional exchanges and higher education opportunities.

“We are dedicated to implementing and managing our cooperation agreement for the mutual benefit of both parties in critical research on various human health issues,” he said.

Dr Ali said that the visit aimed to develop bilateral cooperation in research work involving various areas, including human health.

She emphasized the need for ZAHRI staff to pursue higher education to enhance their expertise and effectiveness in specialized fields.

Prof. Yiayan Huang, relations coordinator at Fudan University, said that the visit was intended to understand Zanzibar’s needs and offer support.

He appreciated the insights gained on fostering research collaboration.

The delegation also visited Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital and met with Chinese medical experts working in Zanzibar. It also visited Lumumba Regional Hospital in the Urban West Region.
