500 researchers to meet in Dar for 12th scientific forum

OVER 500 international and local researchers are expected to disseminate their findings at the 12th Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) scientific conference that will kick off on Thursday.

Appolinary Kamuhabwa, MUHAS Vice Chancellor said that in Dar es Salaam yesterday when speaking to reporters that the conference is to be held at Mloganzila-based campus.

 He said this year's scientific conference is themed: “Science as a story of life: The Power of research, innovation, and collaboration in improving resilient health system.”

The forum is meant to commemorate the life and contribution of the former President the late Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who was also the first MUHAS Chancellor,

Prof Kamuhabwa said the scientific conference will also be deliberated under eight sub-themes which are non-communicable diseases, mental health, surgery, and nutrition.

Others will be communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance, maternal, new born, child, and adolescent health, and oral, eye care.

Also, Social Determinants for Health (One Health), Health Systems Research, Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Drug Discovery and Vaccine Development, cross-cutting issues; Ethics and Professionalism, Artificial Intelligence, Technology, Occupational Health, and Climate Change.

He said that during the scientific conference, a total of 80 papers will be presented orally while 107 abstracts will be presented in fosters.

The don said during the scientific conference, MUHAS will present the success achieved and its contribution in areas of academics, research, and consultancy to mention a few.

He said that some of the findings that will be presented are that 18 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS face chronic diabetes and the best health financing ways to be safe from non-communicable disease attacks.

MUHAS started as the Dar es Salaam Medical School in 1963. The school then transformed into the faculty of medicine of the University of Dar es Salaam in 1991 was upgraded and became a college–the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS).

 In 1996, the Faculty of Medicine was upgraded to a constituent College of the University of Dar es Salaam, to nurture it into a full-fledged university later on was merged with the Muhimbili Hospital to create the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC).
