CSI Energy Group has launched its first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report, titled "The First Stitch," underscoring the company’s dedication to sustainability and ethical leadership in the energy sector.

The report serves as a reflection of the company's focus on environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and sound governance, all vital pillars in the pursuit of sustainable development.

"The First Stitch" symbolizes the company’s commitment to initiating a narrative of change, blending Africa's traditional heritage with innovative practices for a sustainable future.

“We are at the start of a transformative journey, where each decision we make is like a stitch in the fabric of a greener, more inclusive Africa,” said Natacha Emilien, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer, CSI Energy Group.

Emilien highlighted the company's Kinyerezi 1 Extension project in Tanzania, which plays a crucial role in reducing the nation’s dependence on hydropower.

The natural gas-fired power plant has bolstered Tanzania’s energy security and is estimated to have saved the country $500 million in fuel costs.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a member of the UN Global Compact, CSI Energy Group integrate universal principles of human rights, labour, environmental protection, and anti-corruption into its operations.

As part of their climate action commitment (SDG 13), the company aims to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 10 percent by 2025 through enhanced energy efficiency and reduced carbon output.

A company statement emphasized the importance of embedding sustainability into everyday operations, citing initiatives such as the promotion of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), water conservation, and waste management as part of their tangible environmental impact.

In 2023, CSI Energy Group created 545 jobs, 85 of which were filled by women.

The company also provided practical training to 26 interns, nine of whom were retained for future growth.

"Our corporate social initiatives are focused on fostering local community development. For instance, our collaboration with local food vendors has driven economic activity, positioning us not just as an employer but as a true community partner," said Christine Nafula, Sustainability Manager at CSI Energy Group.

Nafula highlighted the wide-reaching effects of these initiatives, which include providing local families with necessities, offering road safety training, and enhancing educational resources.

"By working closely with local vendors and accommodation providers, we’re creating new economic opportunities that extend far beyond our immediate projects," she added.

Looking ahead, Nafula reaffirmed the company's commitment to ensuring that every "stitch" in their journey is meaningful and enduring.

"While challenges remain, we are energized by the prospects of achieving a just energy transition. This report is not only a reflection of our efforts but also a promise to build a future where sustainable energy is accessible to all Africans," she concluded.

CSI Energy Group operates as a diversified network of companies across Africa, offering resilient energy solutions through three core divisions: high-level engineering, procurement, and construction; energy transition and renewable energy project development; and financing.

With over two decades of experience in 12 countries and more than 200 completed projects in sectors such as renewable energy, electricity infrastructure, oil and gas, and mining, the company continues to promote sustainable development across the continent.

The company believes that access to electricity is a human right, and CSI Energy Group is dedicated to enabling a just energy transition in Africa, ensuring equitable access to energy for all.
