FARMERS across the country have been encouraged to take advantage of various insurance products that offer protection for both their crops and financial plans.

Nelson Bwihula, Chief Executive Officer of Newton Insurance, emphasized the significant advantages of agro-insurance, including financial protection, risk management, improved access to credit, business sustainability, and increased investment in agriculture.

Bwihula made the remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday during an event to announce the company’s rebranding from UAP Insurance to Newton Insurance. The new products have been designed to provide relief to farmers and protect them from the uncertainty of natural disasters that can devastate crop production.

“Farmers often face many uncertainties, particularly with natural disasters,” said Bwihula. “At Newton Insurance, we have developed coverage to eliminate these uncertainties and ensure farmers are compensated in the event of a tragedy.”

The insurance covers a range of risks, including drought, hail, floods, frost, windstorms, pests and diseases.

Bwihula also assured farmers that claims would be processed promptly in line with regulations set by the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA).

He encouraged farmers to form groups to facilitate easier access to the coverage.

“It’s more efficient to work with farmer unions rather than dealing with individuals. We encourage farmers to use their unions to access this essential cover, and our teams are ready to guide them,” Bwihula said.

Frank Kajo, Bancassurance Manager, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding its services and raising awareness, particularly amidst the ongoing drought challenges affecting many farmers in the country.

“Farmers need to insure their crops to protect against losses in the event of a disaster,” said Kajo. “We have a dedicated team of experts who will assess crop damage and ensure timely compensation.”

In 2024 alone, Newton Insurance reached over 4,000 farmers with insurance services, with 1,200 farmers receiving compensation after disasters. The company continues to expand its outreach and focus on educating the public about the importance of timely insurance coverage.

Arthur Oginga, CEO of Old Mutual Group, further emphasized Newton Insurance's mission to bring affordable, high-quality insurance services to Tanzanians, particularly those in remote areas.

Oginga also expressed gratitude to the company’s agents and customers for their continued support as Newton Insurance strives to reach even more communities in the coming years.
