AT: Tanzania keen on winning gold medals in 2020 Olympics

ATHLETICS Tanzania (AT) has said it is focusing on seeing to it the country's athletes win gold medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

AT secretary general, Wilhelm Gidabuday, said Tanzania has never won a gold medal in the Olympics since it started competing in the event in 1964.

He said currently the country has 10 athletes, who have what it takes to win medals in Olympic Games , but Felix Simbu is the only athlete that can win gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

" We have many top athletes who can bring home medals, but to be honest Simbu is the only athlete who if well trained and stay focused can win gold medal," he said.

For that reason, the AT boss said his association wants Simbu to concentrate on preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Gidabuday stopped short of either confirming or denying Simbu will represent the county in the coming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

He disclosed that Tanzania's quota in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is six athletes, while 10 qualified for the event.

The AT official mentioned the athletes who are expected to camp ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia as marathoners Augustino Sulle, Ezekiel Jaffary, Said Makula, Sara Ramadhan and Stephano Huche, Emmanuel Giniki and Failuna Abdi, who participate in the 5000m and 10,000m races respectively.

Gidabuday said other athletes, who have qualified for the games but have not earmarked for the camp, are marathoners Fabian Joseph and Reginald Lucas.

He also mentioned athletes, who have not qualified for the games but earmarked for the camp, as Jackline Sakilu and Theophil Joseph, who will compete in 5000meters, Ally Khamis in 100/200m and Antony Mwanga that take part in field events.

"AT treats all athletes equally, any athlete who has reached the qualifying standard, is fit to represent the country at any event," the AT official disclosed.

"Our technical committee will meet soon to come out with names of athlete who will represent Tanzania in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games."

Meanwhile, the AT official said the association will meet with Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) and government officials to discuss the county's preparations for the Gold Coast Games.
