AT president pessimistic over Rio-bound athletes

ATHLETICS Tanzania (AT) president Anthony Mtaka yesterday said local athletes are not ready for the Brazil Olympics, but said they have time to improve.

Mtaka said this at the end of the Kids Run championship staged in Dar es Salaam on Sunday

He said all the three athletes currently camping in Kilimanjaro are in good shape but not ready for the Olympics.

“If the Olympics are held today (Sunday) they cannot win but with the training they are currently undergoing I think they will improve a lot’” he said.

He said there is much work to be done if local athletes were to meet the target of winning gold medals in Rio.

Mtaka also urges for corporate support to help the local athletes to prepare well for the games.“I have said enough about poor financial support, we must help our athletes so that they can train well,” he said.

Commenting on the just ended kids run, Mtaka thanked the organisers and sponsors, saying it is good that kids are given a chance to test running at a very young age.

He said it was a very good development as it will make the kids to be ready for future events.
“This is very good and I would have loved if it is happening every week, this kids have shown that they have very good talent, what is needed is to monitor, nurture and develop them, if we keep on doing this they will be ready for national duties when they reach the age of 16,” he said.
