High Court judges and employers` representatives from eight countries will on Thursday attend a three-day African Sub-regional workshop on `Decent Work for People with HIV/Aids and with Disabilities` organized by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The director of the ILO Office responsible for Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia, Jorgen Schwettmann, said in Dar es Salaam that the participating judges and lawyers from unions and employer bodies from Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia will focus on HIV/Aids and disability commonly arising in work places using ILO standards and Codes of Practice.
He said: ``Thousands of workers everyday face discrimination at their workplaces based on their disability, real or perceived HIV status.
Hence the workshop aims at enhancing the jurisdictions` capacity to deal with complaints relating to HIV/Aids and disability in the world of work to ensure better compliance.``
ILO and its 181 member states have adopted standards and Codes of Practice in these two areas of workplace equality that govern policy approaches at the national level.
``The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, recently ratified by seven African countries (Egypt, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Namibia, South Africa and Tunisia), has entered into force and becomes the international treaty that will help protect against disability discrimination generally,`` Schwettmann said.
