Tanzania, DRC plan hydrocarbons research in Lake Tanganyika

Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo plan a joint research and exploration hydrocarbons in Lake Tanganyika, a statement released yesterday following a meeting of ministers in charge of oil and gas of Tanzania and DRC, has said.

``The two ministers agreed to initiate a joint plan on the research and exploration of hydrocarbons in Lake Tanganyika with due consideration for environmental impact of any productive activity to be undertaken within this basin,`` declared the statement.

Tanzania was represented by Energy and Minerals Minister William Ngeleja while DRC Minister of Hydrocarbons Lambert Mende Omalanga led his country`s delegation to the meeting which also discussed transit petroleum fuels to DRC from Dar es Salaam.

On modalities to efficiently haul oil products, the DRC agreed to produce a list of genuine enrolled oil companies allowed to supply oil products through Tanzania, specifying the fuel requirement per term (volume and grade).

DRC will also establish a follow-up commission to coordinate with Tanzania, specifying entry points for oil products in line with official transit routes.

Tanzania will improve infrastructure for efficient handling of oil products at Dar es Salaam port, the statement said.
